Athens Township

Athens Township is located in Eastern Ontario. It is made up of the town of Athens and several smaller towns.

The town was first settled in 1792, and has a tremendous history evident in the many historic buildings along its main drive.

The surrounding area consists of scenic farmland and forests, and beyond that are the St. Lawrence River, cities like Kingston to the south and Ottawa to the north, and the rugged beauty of Ontario’s Southeastern Cottage Country.

Athens Township Real Estate

As the largest urban centre for many miles around, the homes for sale in Athens are often good examples of mid-century single-family houses. The sense of mid-century suburbia is highlighted in the garrison house designs, low ranch or split-level layouts, and limited use of traditional accents.

However, given the roots of the community in local agriculture, the farmhouse is another typical design displayed in the Athens real estate market. Here you can expect tall peaked gables, attic spaces, wood frame and siding construction, and large front decks.

Athens was renamed from “Farmersville” in 1888 due to the high number of schools and education facilities in the town, and this is another factor that makes homes in Athens desirable. Being a great place for kids to attend high school nearby is a good selling point.

Other options include empty plots or land in the area, small farms, or one of the beautiful historic buildings in Athens’ downtown district. These buildings are usually finished in brick and offer an opportunity to benefit from Athens’ status as a hub of the local economy.

Athens Township

Athens Township consists of a number of smaller communities and settlements, including Wiltsetown, Hayes Corners, Glen Elbe, Beales Mills, and Anoma Lea. The entire township falls within the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville (also known as Leeds Grenville), among other townships like Rideau Lakes, and Leeds and the Thousand Islands.

Attractions & Highlights In Athens

Athens is not just an isolated rural town, it’s a community hub for an expansive area extending for many kilometres around. As such, the town holds regular events to bring the community together, and has many well-maintained facilities for their use.

Some annual events in Athens include:

  • Cornfest
  • Farmersville Steam Fair
  • Parade of Lights
  • Fireworks Festival
  • Charleston Lake Regatta

The town is also home to a beautiful historic post office and community centre, the Joshua Bates Centre for performing arts, the Athens Public Library, and a number of cafes and diners.

Athens is also known for the large murals painted on some of the town’s buildings. These murals depict scenes from Athens’ history and offer an instructive dash of colour to an already characterful town.

Athens is a gateway to many other activities and attractions beyond its borders. From the endless recreation and adventure offered by Ontario’s Cottage Country to the northwest, to the historic sites and natural beauty of the Thousand Islands region to the south, and beautiful cities like Kingston and Ottawa just a stone’s throw away - Athens is a small-town, both away from it all and with everything to offer.
