Green Living Tips

Practicing green living tips is not only good for the environment, but it can often save you money, too! There are plenty of ways to implement green living in your home, and most are easy to start doing.

Turn off the Lights

This is an oldie but a goodie—turning off the lights is an easy way to save on your energy bill and also keep it green. Make use of natural light when possible by opening up your curtains during the day.

Install LED Lightbulbs

Speaking of lighting—LED lightbulbs are up to 90% more efficient than incandescent light bulbs and last much longer.
LED bulbs that are ENERGY STAR certified are the most efficient of all.

Use Cold Water

Using cold water for washing clothing is an easy way to save on energy, and most clothing can be washed just as well in cold water as in hot.

Use Green Cleaners

Many cleaning products contain harmful chemicals that will find their way back into the environment. Chemicals aren’t always necessary—a mixture of vinegar and baking soda can work as a basic cleaner for most tasks! (And can save you money on cleaning products, too.)

Purchase Energy-Efficient Appliances

When it comes time to buying new appliances, consider purchasing ENERGY STAR products. They are more efficient and can also save you money. However, don’t buy new appliances until it’s necessary and be mindful of how you dispose of them when they’re due to be replaced.

Keep Your Lawn Green

Many lawn care products contain harmful herbicides and pesticides that are damaging to the environment. Look for organic products and begin treating your lawn with compost as an alternative to traditional lawncare products.

Start a Compost Pile

Compost is an easy way to maintain a healthy lawn and get rid of your food waste. Create your compost with vegetable, fruit, and garden scraps and mulches.

Plant Trees

Planting trees near windows is a great way to keep your home cooler during the summer months. The shade provided by the trees will not only help with the heat, but can offer privacy as well.

Install Smart Technology

Smart technology is becoming more and more common in homes everywhere, and it’s not just because it’s convenient—smart technology can be used to save energy as well! For example, a smart thermostat can be set to lower the temperature of your home during hours when people are out or asleep. This can be done automatically so you don’t even have to think about it.

Consider Alternate Forms of Energy

If you’re able to make the investment into alternate energy sources such as solar panels, it will save you both money and energy in the long run. Your province or city may offer incentive and/or rebate programs to install renewable energy sources.

Implementing this small changes can make a big difference when it comes to living green!
